Orbital pivot: How a thermal satellite company found their new market

constellr

  • Website

  • 2025

[ around the web ]

[ PROJECT SUMMARY ] constellr owns and operates thermal satellites. They expanded their operations to serve both commercial and high-value institutional markets. Their website needed to communicate this growth and position them as a trusted partner across commercial and mission-critical applications.

Industry:

Aerospace & Defence

Products:

Corporate website

Market:

Global

[ HIGHLIGHTS ]

  • German-based company founded in 2020

  • European thermal satellite operator with 2 satellites in orbit

  • World's most accurate commercially available thermal intelligence

  • Serving government and defence sectors globally

[ project Context ]

Mission shift

constellr is a German company operating at the intersection of space technology, Earth observation, and data intelligence. Rare differentiator: they own their satellites in orbit. The company proudly holds the title: the world's most accurate commercially available thermal intelligence. As demand from government and institutional clients grew, constellr expanded into high-value markets alongside their commercial operations. They needed a strategic partner to guide this evolution.

[ Goals ]

Strategic design aligned
with business

transformation objectives

Strategic repositioning
Evolve brand identity to reflect constellr’s expanded market reach – from commercial agriculture to gov and institutional clients. Position them as a trusted operator across both sectors, capable of delivering mission-critical thermal data at scale.

Market differentiation
Establish competitive separation through operational satellites that deliver real data and plain-language communication. Stand out in a sector where startups sell roadmaps, big players use jargon, and promises dominate over proof.

Business value delivery
Strengthen credibility with stakeholders by signalling institutional maturity, operational proof, and strategic market focus.

Talent & culture
Present the company as a serious, mission-driven space organisation to support talent acquisition and retention within a competitive sector.

[ Challenges ]

Repositioning without
erasure

Two audience, opposite expectations. Both needed to trust the same brand.

The commercial heritage was undervalued – and the strongest proof of capability.

An agricultural legacy that competitors could weaponise – or constellr could own as a dual-use advantage.

Government buyers, investors, and talent each needed a different reason to believe.

Space Odyssey:
In search of insights

Strategic design starts with understanding what needs solving before deciding how to solve it. We invested time upfront mapping constellr's market position, competitive advantages, and the landscape we were entering together.

  • Launch

constellr had three genuine strengths entering this pivot. First: operational satellites delivering data today. Second: battle-tested technology, including the world's most accurate commercially available thermal intelligence. Third: institutional readiness.

Operational satellites meant a rare advantage. Most competitors sell roadmaps and promises, not working hardware. Agriculture clients proved battle-tested technology in real conditions. Institutional readiness meant they'd been in the market long enough to move past startup positioning.

Critical insight for government procurement: buyers view startups with suspicion. Sometimes it's a dealbreaker. They need proven stability and operational certainty. Constellr had this maturity, but their positioning didn't reflect it.

The Constellr team are scientists at heart. They didn't want to erase the startup's origins or its agricultural legacy. Smart instinct. We helped them see both as advantages. Startup roots signal agility and rapid data delivery. Agricultural heritage proves innovation and accessibility.

  • Expedition

We conducted over 16 stakeholder interviews to wrap our heads around the underlying technology and market positioning. The scope was extensive – and necessary. The technology was complex, and the client was making a strategic market shift.

We audited nearly 20 direct competitors and adjacent players across Earth observation, defence aerospace, and data intelligence platforms.

  • Discovery

Complex landscape to navigate. But gathering this understanding upfront saved time. We started execution with confidence, knowing exactly what needed to be communicated and why.

[ TONE OF VOICE ]

The voice of constellr

[ TONE OF VOICE ]

Based on the jargon myth research, we developed three distinct tone-of-voice concepts.

constellr’s leadership chose military precision combined with plain-language elements, but not storytelling-driven. Their choice proved our insight right: government sectors demand directness, not complexity.

[ COPY & UX WRITING ]

Content-first approach

For this project, we adopted a content-first workflow. Not common, but strategically sound.

  • The project demanded deep strategic immersion.

  • Substantial content volume combined with tight deadlines enabled nearly parallel work. Flow was copy → UX → UI, page by page.

  • Certainty that the copy would fit the UX mockups first, then the UI. Visual design played a critical role and needed to support, not constrain, the messaging.

[ UX DESIGN ]

First impressions matter

For constellr's target audience, the homepage wasn't a marketing surface but a credibility test. Organic search visitors arrived with a single question: is this a serious, trustworthy partner?

The hero section answered that directly. We anchored constellr's unique position – the world's most accurate commercially available thermal intelligence – in operational proof and European credibility, prioritising trust over persuasion.

When pictures speak better than words, use them

Sometimes a graphic or animation conveys more clearly than several long paragraphs of text. This was exactly that situation.

Complex thermal intelligence capabilities are difficult to explain through text alone. We used animation strategically to demonstrate what thermal satellites reveal: activity, change, and stress over time. Animation made the technology tangible without overwhelming users with technical specifications.

Information architecture prioritised simplicity over breadth of features. The structure stayed lightweight and scannable, guiding users from reassurance to understanding to relevance.

Simplicity by design

Navigation stayed intentionally small and concise. Information architecture prioritised simplicity over complex layouts. We created a sitemap that defines key entry points, calls to action across the user journey, and essential outbound paths to external platforms such as GitHub and Recruitee.

Confusing contact form

People used the contact form to apply for jobs, not become leads. Career inquiries filled the sales pipeline. We separated pathways: clear Recruitee integration for careers, and restructured the contact form for business inquiries with proper qualification fields.

[ UI DESIGN ]

Designing operational
authority

The visual strategy positioned constellr as mission-ready and deeply intelligent. Among our benchmarks were Palantir, Planet Labs, NASA, and ICEYE. We aimed for the same visual authority as leading aerospace and intelligence platforms.

Layouts function like mission interfaces. Structured, analytical, operational-grade rather than marketing surfaces. HUD-inspired design with Neue Corp typeface for precision.

Visual language directly references actual thermal satellite data. Orange-to-red gradients showing heat signatures, blue tones for cooler zones - matching what analysts see in real thermal intelligence systems. This wasn't just an aesthetic choice. The client deliberately wanted visual accuracy that builds instant recognition and credibility with users who work with this technology daily.

[ development ]

Translating design into
code

Even the most beautiful pixels remain mockups without someone to translate the design into working code. The solution was built in Webflow because it was the client's existing CMS and hosting environment. This ensured continuity with their current setup and avoided unnecessary platform migration.

Built for independence

We created a scalable platform that allows constellr to manage content independently. The CMS structure gives them the flexibility to adjust messaging, add new use cases, and update technical details without depending on developers. As their thermal intelligence capabilities expand and new government partnerships emerge, the website can evolve with them.

[ Results ]

Mission accomplished

MISSION 1

Strategic Positioning

STATUS: ACHIEVED

Strategic design aligned with business objectives delivered a complete website rebuild supporting market transformation. Approach: new voice development, target audience research, and extensive stakeholder engagement. Without this strategic foundation, mission success would not have been achievable.

MISSION 2

Market Differentiation

STATUS: ACHIEVED

constellr now operates as a serious European intelligence player across both commercial and institutional markets. The expanded positioning reflects operational maturity in agriculture alongside growing authority in government and defence. A plain-language approach creates competitive differentiation while building decision-maker trust.

MISSION 3

Business Value Delivery

STATUS: ACHIEVED

Website functions as a strategic asset, not a visual exercise. Purpose: risk reduction for government stakeholders evaluating partnership viability. Every design decision is defensible through a strategy-first methodology. Foundation scales across future use cases and capability expansion without re-architecture.

[ Testimonial ]

“Treat this as a collaborative partnership, not a transactional engagement. Flying Bisons brings strong thinking, moves quickly, and will go the extra mile to deliver high-quality results.”
