Affinity Mapping

In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, understanding user needs and organising insights effectively is key to creating successful products and services. Affinity Mapping offers a simple yet powerful solution to this challenge.

What is
Affinity Mapping?

Affinity Mapping is a collaborative technique for organising and categorising large amounts of data into thematic groups, often during brainstorming or ideation sessions.

In digital strategy, this method is particularly useful for sorting user feedback, research findings, ideas, or problems into clusters for easier analysis. It helps identify patterns, trends, and relationships within the data that might not be immediately apparent.

Maintain your data more efficiently
with Affinity Mapping

Is your business collecting a large amount of data, but you're not sure how to make the most of it? Maybe you do know, but you need help organising and categorising it. Let us show you how Affinity Map can help your organisation and revolutionise the way you manage your data.

Understanding user needs

By categorising user feedback and research data, Affinity Mapping provides deeper insights into user behaviours, preferences, and pain points.

Informed decision making

The organised data helps in making informed decisions about product features, marketing strategies, and other digital initiatives.

Clarity and focus

It simplifies complex datasets, giving a clear picture of what matters most to users. This, in turn, helps focus efforts on areas with the highest impact.

Collaboration and alignment

The collaborative nature of Affinity Mapping ensures team alignment and consensus on key issues and strategies.

Innovation and creativity

This approach often sparks new ideas and creative solutions by revealing unexpected connections and patterns.

Our Approach to
Affinity Mapping

When we approach Affinity Mapping for our clients, we always adhere to the latest industry trends and use field-tested frameworks. On top of that we have developed our own unique approach.

  • Data collection

At the very beginning we are gathering large amounts of data from various sources such as user interviews, surveys, analytics, etc.

  • Team collaboration session

Once we gather the data, it is time to organise it in a collaborative session with team members and stakeholders. Such collaboration might take place physically with notes or digitally using collaborative tools – it all depends on what the participants of this step prefer.

  • Sorting and grouping

During the team collaboration session, we sort individual data points (ideas, feedback, observations) into related groups. This is typically done by identifying common themes or patterns. Here, we are starting to create a pattern for each data point, and you can see how the data is starting to become more organised.

  • Thematic analysis

After the data is sorted and grouped, we are moving to analyse these clusters to identify overarching themes or insights. This might involve naming each group and discussing its relevance to the client’s objectives.

  • Action plan development

Here, we already have our final version of the Affinity Map, but it is not the end of our work. Now, we will use the insights gained from the created map to develop a strategic action plan. This could involve prioritising features for a digital product, outlining key areas for user experience improvement, or strategising marketing efforts.

  • Presentation and feedback

Finally, we are ready to present the findings and proposed strategies to the client for feedback, ensuring that the insights align with their business goals and user needs.

Affinity Mapping in a digital strategy context is a powerful tool for translating complex, scattered data into actionable insights. For Flying Bisons, this approach not only facilitates a deep understanding of user needs and behaviours but also fosters a collaborative and creative environment for developing impactful digital strategies.

Where Strategy
Fits in the Process

[ Process ]

A solid product strategy is key. It helps you deliver a consistent product and experience, and powers you towards your business goals.

Product strategy comes before any design work starts – and it has an overarching influence on every subsequent phase of the process. For every project we work on, we make sure the strategy is created with painstaking care and clarity of purpose. This often means asking tough questions, making difficult decisions, and interrogating the viability of different solutions. Ultimately, we need to make sure we design the right thing – before designing the thing right.
