In the practical yet creative world of UX, UI, and Product Design, a key player is often left at the end: copywriting. While everyone admires the sleek layout and vibrant visuals, the words wait for their turn. But what if we brought the copy earlier into the game?

Envisioning copy as a key player from the start can revolutionise how you approach interface design. It's not just about making things look good; it's about making them communicate effectively and resonate with the audience. By integrating copy early, we can craft interfaces rich in narrative and functionality.

Design without copywriting is like sheet music without notes.

In the realm of Product Design, the interplay between words and visuals can be likened to an orchestra. Each element – text, colour, shape, or imagery – is a unique instrument. With no harmony between them, the results can be out of tune. Then, each section plays a different melody, leading to a cacophony rather than a symphony.

The relationship between words and visuals goes beyond looking good together. They need to work in tandem to guide and inform the user. After all, a visually stunning call to action button is only compelling if its copy clearly communicates its function (it’s actually called “microcopy”, and we talked about it when we gave tips for good microcopy). This synergy is crucial in creating an interface that is not only intuitive and user-friendly but also deeply engaging.

The multifaceted role of copy

In interface design, a copy is a pivotal element that shapes user experience, drives engagement, and embodies the brand's voice.

Guiding the user journey

Copy acts as a guide for users, leading them through the interface. It's a signpost at every turn, offering clear directions and reducing the cognitive load. Well-crafted copy ensures users know what to do next – sign up for a newsletter, learn more about a product, or navigate to a different section. You can read more about it in our article on UX writing.

Expressing brand personality

Each brand has a unique tone of voice that should be heard across their product interfaces – from error messages to product descriptions. For example, if a brand wants to sound friendly and conversational, a standard error message, such as "Error 404: Page Not Found," won't cut it. It won't fit with the customer's experience with the brand. However, a message like "Oops! We can't seem to find that page. Let's try heading back home" would complement it perfectly as it maintains the brand's friendly and approachable voice.

Providing clarity and context

The copy gives context to the visuals. It explains them if necessary and adds depth. Even the most beautifully designed interface can fail to communicate its purpose without a clear copy.

Encouraging user action

Effective copy prompts users to take action through compelling call-to-action buttons, persuasive product descriptions, or engaging prompts throughout the user journey. The right words can significantly increase user interaction and conversion rates.

Our approach to integrating copywriting and design

The seamless integration of copywriting and design lies at the heart of creating engaging and effective interfaces. We insist on a collaborative approach to enhance the user experience and solidify the brand's presence in the digital space.

Here's how we facilitate the integration:

Early inclusion of copywriters

We involve the copywriters at the stage of the initial brainstorming sessions, ensuring that the narrative and design vision grow together. This early involvement helps set a unified direction for the project's visual and written elements.

Building a shared vision

Designers and copywriters work closely together to develop a shared vision for the project. As a result, every element, from button texts to page headers, contributes coherently to the user's journey, reinforcing the brand's identity and message.

By viewing copy and design as two halves of a whole, we create experiences that are not only visually striking but also deeply resonate with our audience.

Regular and iterative feedback

Our process is iterative, and we run regular feedback loops between copywriters and designers. This constant communication allows for fine-tuning the interface – ensuring that the copy and visuals are aligned and optimised for clarity, usability, and engagement.

Testing with real users

User testing sessions focus on how the audience responds to the integrated design and copy. Observing real users interact with the product provides invaluable insights that the copy and design teams use to make informed adjustments and refine the overall experience.

Adapting and evolving

The digital landscape is ever-changing, and so are the user expectations. Our approach, as well as our copy and design teams, adapt to industry shifts to ensure the product remains relevant, engaging, and true to the brand's voice.

Summary

Banding together copy and design has illuminated a clear path forward for creating more effective, engaging, and memorable digital experiences. This partnership between word and visual is not just a best practice but a fundamental shift in how we conceive and execute digital interfaces.
